On a card with a number of small field today, the feature race at 3.00pmis the Lord Mildmay Memorial Handicap Chase, a class 1 handicap run over 2m5f110yds. 15 of the original 16 are due to go to post since Bushwacker was withdrawn and my fancy for the race is Lord Ryeford from the yard of Tom George.

Trainer: Tom George

He ran in this race two years ago, finishing fourth on a mark some 12lbs higher than he need carry today. Since then, he has been seen under rules only after a years break and then in Hunter Chases before returning to handicap company in June. Reappearing with a mark of just 113, a good run at Ffos Las was followed a win at Bangor for which he goes out today nine pounds higher. The win at Bangor was comfortable though and it looks like the old ability remains. A decent sized field and far higher rated rivals mean a good price, around 9/1, can be had.

Check the odds box to the right of this article, selection Newton Abbot and then the 3.00pm race to see the most up to date prices available.

Mamlook might be fancied after a break and whilst Sir Ian has been beating far better runners than he is faced with today, he has risen to a career high mark
