Cheltenham Festival: Is There Any Challenge to Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle?

Cheltenham Festival: Is There Any Challenge to Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle?

The Arkle is only the second race of the Festival yet many would believe we have the first banker of the meeting in Nicky Henderson’s Sprinter Sacre. Few would disagree after a wonderful display at Newbury on Fabulous Friday. Last years winner of the Game Spirit Chase French Opera was unable to defend the title, and Sprinter Sacre ensured only a runner up place for him by a facile six lengths with Zaynar and Hold Fast further back some 20 and 36 lengths! Before running through all the entries and looking for a likely winner, a look at a couple of selected trends for the race will make this excercise more interesting. 22 of the last 24 winners had finished first or second last time out. Whilst this is a heavy trend, one would obviously be looking for a good level of form coming into the race. At this stage,...

Champions League: Tuesday Night Misery for Chelsea

Champions League: Tuesday Night Misery for Chelsea

Chelsea in tough trip to Naples and CSKA Moscow face the might of Real Madrid in the Champions League. An opportunity this Tuesday night to gain something back of the Champions League betting bank which once sat proudly at +15 points before Christmas but last week took an almighty pounding. NAPOLI V CHELSEA If things were not bad enough already for AvB and Chelsea without a win in four games, Tuesday night in Italy could compound things. The only bright thing about Chelsea’s season thus far is their European record, well, their record in Europe at Stamford Bridge that is. Whilst in front of home support they have won all three matches, scoring ten goals and conceding none in return; away from home they are win-less, gaining single points at Valencia and Genk, conceding a goal each time and going down 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. With all...

Cheltenham Festival: Supreme Novices Hurdle 2012 Preview and Tips

Cheltenham Festival: Supreme Novices Hurdle 2012 Preview and Tips

The Cheltenham Festival Curtain raiser is always a tricky event to work out as improvement always plays a part along with many other factors. Here I try to make some sense of the line up The traditional roar that greets the commentary of  ”……..and they’re off” always sets the hairs on the back of the neck off, as finally after months of preparation and building anticipation, the Cheltenham Festival is finally, officially underway. There is no better race to find the winner in, to get the week off to a good start and build a nice buffer into the betting bank. 2012 promises a good opportunity from the Ante Post market as the favourite is still 8/1 I am already on COLOUR SQUADRON who fell when in contention in the race at Newbury won by MONTBAZON, with VULCANITE runner up. Having watched the race back on several occasions already just to...

Champions League: Gunners can shoot down Milan

Champions League: Gunners can shoot down Milan

No opportunities for a bet in the Zenit v Benfica game in the Champions League on Wednesday so all eyes turn to Milan and how they can contain Arsenal 9 points became six in the MOB betting bank in last nights games in the Champions League, but some redress cold be found tonight in Italy as AC Milan host Arsenal in their first leg game. Milan sit atop what, to be fair, is a mediocre Serie A table and although winning 2 of their 3 home games in the group stages, they did so only against the likes of Viktoria Plzen and BATE. they managed a brace of goals in the final game against Barcelona but the visitors did run out quite comfortable winners on the night by a 2-3 scoreline. Arsenal did not light any huge fires on their travels in the group stages, but are more than capable of...

Champions League: Tuesday 14th February, Barca go to Bayer

Champions League: Tuesday 14th February, Barca go to Bayer

Bayer Leverkusen host Barcelona and Lyon face APOEL in the first matches of the knock out stage of this seasons Champions League. The 2 month break from Champions League football was welcome after a pretty disastrous final round of matches. Disastrous for Manchester City, but of more concern, my Champions League betting bank. From a position of 14 points profit going into the final Wednesday, a five point loss was suffered with a total blank in five bets on the final day. The wounds have just about healed and we enter the final stage with a 9 point buffer. Two games to consider as the final stages get underway. LYON v APOEL On paper one might think that odds of 1.45 for the home win in France for this tie could offer some value and one might agree, but surely a price in excess of 8/1 for the Cypriot...

Cheltenham Festival: Quevega Attempts a Fourth David Nicholson Hurdle – No Bet Yet

Willie Mullins can steal a little thunder from the Big Bucks camp on Tuesday should his first lady of Cheltenham, Quevega come up the hill to a fourth consecutive triumph in the David Nicholson Mares Only Hurdle on Tuesday. The race has been run only four times to date and the last three years the title has gone to the very lightly raced 8yo. So lightly raced in fact that her three wins of this race have come in her last six races! She has of course scored on each occasion and a perfect record of 6 from 6 is only blunted by a third place finish at Punchestown in the Rabobank Champion hurdle in 2009. For the following two seasons she has gone to the World Series Hurdle at Punchestown following Cheltenham and scored with similar ease. QUEVEGA will be a “banker” for many for the opening day....
